At the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), Vice President Ma’ruf Amin stressed the critical need for Indonesia’s national auto industry to achieve greater independence. Speaking at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in Tangerang Regency, Banten, Vice President Amin highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive automotive ecosystem, covering everything from raw material production to assembly and supporting industries.
This initiative aligns with the ambitious vision of Indonesia Gold 2045, aiming for economic transformation through enhanced productivity and competitiveness. “I believe the national automotive industry can take a big role in supporting this effort, given the great potential we have,” Vice President Amin stated.
The Vice President highlighted the necessity for the industry to adapt to increasing global environmental awareness by advancing eco-friendly automotive technologies, particularly electric vehicles. “Some of these things are important in order to strengthen the capacity and added value of the national automotive industry so that they can compete with other national products,” he asserted.
Notably, the global automotive industry has shown resilience, rebounding with a nearly 10 percent growth in 2023 despite widespread uncertainties. This recovery presents a substantial opportunity for Indonesia to join the ranks of the world’s top ten motor vehicle manufacturers.
Domestically, the Vice President noted the transportation equipment industry’s significant contribution to the national economy, with a growth rate exceeding 7 percent and a nearly 6 percent increase in export performance in 2023. The automotive sector remains a cornerstone of national industrial growth, supported by major investments and employment, impacting approximately 1.5 million people within the supply chain.
Vice President Amin emphasized the necessity of further enhancing the capacity of Indonesia’s automotive industry to meet both domestic and global market demands. “This is of course a potential that must be utilized to spur Indonesia into the top ten motor vehicle manufacturers in the world,” he concluded.
