Volkswagen Group has extended its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for an additional five years to advance its factory cloud, the Digital Production Platform (DPP).
Developed jointly by AWS and Volkswagen Group, the DPP is central to the company’s strategy for improving manufacturing processes throughout its global production network. By incorporating AI into its operations, VW Group seeks to boost production efficiency, reduce costs, and accelerate the rollout of new vehicles. According to the company, the platform is already in use at 43 sites across Europe, North America, and South America.
Volkswagen stated that the renewed partnership with Amazon Web Services will enable smoother connectivity throughout its production facilities, simplifying the process of vehicle assembly.
The platform serves as a digital backbone, enabling seamless data flow throughout the entire production chain—from order intake to logistics and manufacturing. It also facilitates the uniform deployment of new IT systems across Volkswagen Group’s factories.

AWS’s cloud services are crucial in hosting the company’s core production systems, helping to minimize the risk of production line disruptions.
The group utilizes over 1,200 AI applications for software development and improving quality control. According to VW, with AWS’s Amazon SageMaker, it can train AI models and develop industrial computer vision applications, resulting in improved quality control and cost savings. Additionally, the DPP paves the way for the adoption of software-defined vehicles (SDVs), where software primarily controls and updates vehicle functions.
By leveraging cloud and AI technologies, Volkswagen estimates savings of tens of millions of euros in the medium term. The platform enables real-time tracking of production lines, predictive equipment maintenance, and streamlined supply chain operations. Additionally, the cloud-based system facilitates the rapid sharing of innovations across factories, allowing successful improvements in one location to be efficiently implemented in others.
