UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd embarks on a groundbreaking journey with the unveiling of its Beyond Zero initiative, mirroring Toyota’s worldwide commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by the year 2050. Launched at Technology Park Malaysia, Bukit Jalil, this initiative showcases a series of innovative strategies for embedding sustainable and eco-friendly practices within the automotive industry.
The event attracted notable figures, including Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who underscored the imperative of Malaysia’s pivot towards renewable energy. Citing Malaysia’s leading position in Southeast Asia on the Energy Transition Index 2023 by the World Economic Forum, the Minister celebrated the nation’s strides towards becoming an energy transition leader. “Toyota’s innovative efforts in clean energy, through its diverse approach, align seamlessly with our national goals,” he articulated.
Datuk K. Ravindran, President of UMW Toyota, highlighted the strategic importance of Malaysia’s automotive industry, particularly its role as a central electrical and electronics manufacturing hub in the region. He underscored the critical need for strategic alignment to harness these capabilities effectively in the environmental crusade.
The Beyond Zero initiative serves as a comprehensive display of Toyota’s electrification roadmap, featuring an array of electrified vehicles from Hybrid EVs (HEVs), Battery EVs (BEVs), to Fuel Cell EVs (FCEVs). These vehicles represent the zenith of automotive sustainability, with advanced technologies and designs aimed at reducing environmental impact.
UMW Toyota has led the charge
UMW Toyota has been at the forefront of promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions in Malaysia, with a remarkable sale of 41,600 HEVs since 2009. This sales milestone underscores the significant environmental impact of their initiatives, equivalent to absorbing approximately 150,000 tons of carbon dioxide, akin to the beneficial effect of planting half a million trees.
This initiative’s inauguration also marked the premiere of UMW Toyota’s cutting-edge BEVs and FCEVs, introducing vehicles like the sleek bZ4X, the robust Hilux BEV, and the innovative C+pod – a compact, two-seater BEV engineered for optimal environmental efficiency. The showcase further extended to pioneering FCEV models such as the Toyota Mirai FCEV, GranAce FCEV, and Hilux FCEV, illustrating the brand’s broad spectrum approach to vehicle electrification.
