BYD, the premier manufacturer of new energy vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs), has secured a multi-year collaboration with Uber, set to roll out 100,000 new BYD EVs on the Uber platform across key global markets.
Initial Focus: Europe and Latin America
The collaboration targets Europe and Latin America first, providing Uber drivers access to competitive pricing and financing for BYD vehicles. Expansion plans include markets across the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, boosting EV adoption in these regions.
A Synergy of Leaders
Uber and BYD both dominate their fields. Uber operates the most extensive on-demand EV network worldwide, while BYD leads in EV production. Their alliance aims to lower the total cost of EV ownership for Uber drivers, speeding up the shift to electric mobility on the Uber platform, and exposing millions of riders to greener rides.
Addressing EV Adoption Barriers
Uber drivers transition to electric vehicles five times faster than private car owners. Despite this, high costs and limited financing options pose major challenges. BYD’s vehicles, noted for affordability, low maintenance costs, and robust battery performance, fit rideshare services perfectly. The partnership explores offering discounts on charging, maintenance, insurance, and various financing and lease options tailored to driver needs in different markets.
Future Ties: Autonomous Vehicles
The partnership extends to developing future autonomous-capable vehicles for the Uber platform. As the largest on-demand mobility and delivery network globally, Uber can introduce autonomous vehicle technology to a broad audience, marking a significant advancement in urban mobility.
Commitment to a Greener Future
“Uber and BYD share a commitment to innovate towards a cleaner, greener world, and I am excited to work together towards that future,” stated Chuanfu Wang, Chairman and President of BYD. Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, added, “When an Uber driver makes the switch to an EV, they can deliver up to four times the emissions benefits compared to a regular motorist, simply because they are on the road more. Many riders also tell us their first experience with an EV is on an Uber trip, and we’re excited to help demonstrate the benefits of EVs to more people around the world.”
Driving Urban Mobility Forward
Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD and CEO of BYD Americas, emphasized, “We are elated to join forces with a global leader like Uber to not only accelerate the transition to electric vehicles but also to make green transportation accessible and affordable for everyone. This collaboration marks a new era in the electrification of urban mobility, and we look forward to seeing our cutting-edge EVs become a common sight on the streets of cities worldwide.”
