Toyota has discontinued the Fortuner off-roader from the Australian lineup after more than ten years, following its long run as one of the company’s lowest-selling models.
The Fortuner will leave the Australian dealerships by mid-2026, though Toyota Australia notes that customers have already been shifting toward other models in its range.
“Fortuner has been a great product for us over the years and has found a relatively small but enthusiastic customer base,” Toyota Australia vice president of sales and marketing Sean Hanley said.
“But with customer preferences shifting in Australia, we made the decision to discontinue the Fortuner,” he added.
Between January and late October 2025, the Fortuner recorded just 2,928 sales, significantly trailing behind competitors like the Ford Everest with 21,915 units and the Isuzu MU-X with 12,499.

Introduced to the Australian market in 2015, the seven-seat Fortuner debuted with a price tag of under $50,000.
Toyota positioned the Fortuner as a diesel-powered alternative to the petrol-only Kluger SUV. Built on the HiLux platform, it featured the same 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine and offered both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive options.
The Everest, built on the Ranger’s ladder-frame chassis, has consistently been positioned by Ford as a rugged 4×4 rival to the more premium Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, an approach that paid off in 2024 when it surpassed the Prado with 26,494 units sold.

In contrast, the Fortuner’s strongest annual performance was in 2022, with just 4,614 sales.
From 2016 to 2024, the Fortuner averaged a modest 3,481 unit sales annually. Even in 2024, when Prado supply was disrupted due to a generational update, the Fortuner lagged behind. Toyota sold only 3,042 Fortuners compared to 9,802 Prados.
Although the new-generation LandCruiser Prado launched in Australia in late 2024, Toyota this week unveiled an expanded HiLux lineup for the latest version of its best-selling model.
