Stellantis and Ample are ushering in a new era for electric vehicle (EV) technology with a partnership focused on Ample’s Modular Battery Swapping Technology. This collaboration aims to dramatically reduce EV charging times, allowing a full battery charge in less than five minutes.
Partnership Overview
Under the binding agreement, Stellantis and Ample will collaborate to refine and implement Ample’s cutting-edge technology, which allows for rapid battery swapping at dedicated stations. This method ensures that EV drivers can replace their depleted batteries with fully charged ones in mere minutes, akin to a traditional gas refueling experience but with the eco-friendly advantage of electric power.
Global Expansion and Initial Rollout
Discussions are underway to expand this technology across various Stellantis platforms and geographies, catering to both fleet and consumer demands. The initial pilot program is set to launch in Madrid, Spain, in 2024. It will utilize a fleet of 100 Fiat 500e vehicles, part of Stellantis’ Free2move car-sharing service. The Fiat 500e, a global best-seller in the EV market, especially in Europe, will be the first to benefit from this technology.
Executive Insights
Ricardo Stamatti, Senior Vice President at Stellantis, emphasized the partnership’s role in enhancing mobility freedom for EV customers. He noted that alongside other projects, Ample’s Modular Battery Swapping solution promises improved energy efficiency, performance, and reduced range anxiety. Khaled Hassounah, CEO of Ample, highlighted the commitment to making EVs universally accessible, stressing the importance of quick charging in promoting EV adoption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Ample’s Technological Edge
Ample’s technology stands out by offering a quick, convenient refueling experience comparable to gasoline stations, while also facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources. The modular design of Ample batteries allows them to be easily swapped without needing to re-engineer vehicle platforms, making them a versatile solution for various EV models.
Infrastructure and Service Model
Ample’s lightweight battery swapping stations can be swiftly deployed in public areas, ensuring scalability to meet growing demand. The process is user-friendly: vehicles are recognized upon arrival at the station, and drivers can initiate the battery swap via a mobile app. Additionally, Ample’s batteries will be available via a subscription service, reducing upfront vehicle costs and ensuring customers have access to the latest battery technology, thus enhancing the vehicle’s range and lifespan.
Stellantis’ Sustainable Vision
Aligned with its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, Stellantis aims for a 100% BEV sales mix in Europe and a 50% mix in the U.S. by 2030. This partnership is a step towards that goal, contributing to Stellantis’ commitment to becoming a carbon net zero corporation by 2038.
Recognition and Awards
Ample’s innovative approach has garnered significant accolades, including recognition by Fast Company, TIME, and XPRIZE, underlining its status as a leader in the transportation and deep tech sectors.
This partnership between Stellantis and Ample marks a pivotal moment in the EV industry, offering a practical, swift, and environmentally friendly solution to one of the biggest challenges in electric vehicle adoption—charging time. As these companies work towards a more sustainable future, their collaboration sets a new standard in EV technology and infrastructure development.
