SSE has officially launched its first ultra-rapid EV charging hub in Ireland. The new facility, located at Lough Sheever Corporate Park in Mullingar, County Westmeath, was inaugurated today by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke TD.
This 10-bay facility represents the first step in SSE’s ambitious project to establish 300 ultra-rapid EV charging stations across the UK and Ireland over the next five years. Each bay is powered by traceable, renewable energy, delivering up to 150 kilowatts (kW) per charge. Vehicles can now achieve 12.5 kilometers of range for every minute spent charging.
This hub is engineered to accommodate both private vehicles and electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). It includes four long wheelbase drive-through bays, purpose-built for eHGVs, marking it as Ireland’s first facility of its kind. Charging just became more accessible and practical for commercial fleets.
Tap’n’Go payment options enhance user convenience, while SSE’s partnership with roaming payment provider Octopus Electroverse simplifies transactions. Customers can expect a streamlined experience.
As demand for EV infrastructure surges, SSE’s initiative aligns with national objectives. The launch of this facility underscores the urgency of expanding Ireland’s charging network, with the National EV Charging Infrastructure Strategy and the draft National En-Route EV Charging Plan already outlining the need.
Sean O’Callaghan, SSE’s EV Operations Director, highlighted the significance: “With the number of EVs on Irish roads growing quickly, the deployment of fast and reliable EV charging infrastructure is essential.”
“The launch of our first ultra-rapid charging hub in Ireland is proof that SSE will support the Irish Government’s ambitions to meet the demand for this infrastructure and this is just the beginning of our ambitions. We are working to build a network of easy-to-reach charging points that will serve communities across Ireland,” he added.
Further expansions are imminent, with additional hubs planned for Blanchardstown Business Park, Greenogue Industrial Estate, and Ashbourne Retail Park. SSE recently announced a strategic joint venture with TotalEnergies under the brand ‘Source,’ set to deploy up to 3,000 ultra-rapid charge points across the UK and Ireland. The transformation of all existing SSE hubs under this new brand is already underway.
Peter Burke TD praised the initiative, emphasizing, “Private investment like this is essential to grow the network with the pace and scale required to meet Ireland’s ambitious targets. I am delighted SSE has selected Mullingar as the location of their first EV charging Hub in Ireland. I have no doubt that businesses in the region with eHGVs, as well as members of the public, will benefit from this innovative site.”
