Sonalika International, a top tractor manufacturer in India, is contemplating a strategic re-entry into the Multiutility Vehicle (MUV) segment with its Rhino MUV. Known primarily for its success in the tractor market, both domestically and globally, Sonalika’s potential venture into MUVs represents a significant shift in its product range.
The Rhino, which previously saw success in India’s tier 2 and 3 markets, might make a comeback. Gaurav Saxena, Director of International Business at Sonalika Tractors, shared a deep affinity for the Rhino. While tractors remain the company’s focus, he did not dismiss the possibility of revisiting the Rhino project.
Sonalika’s Rhino story began in 2006 against the backdrop of a dynamic automotive market. While Maruti Suzuki India led the small car segment, MPVs were gaining popularity, especially in the cab industry. Introduced at Auto Expo 2006, the Rhino emerged as an affordable utility vehicle, competing against Tata Sumo and positioned as an alternative to the discontinued Toyota Qualis.
The development of the Rhino reflected Sonalika’s global aspirations and innovative spirit. The company collaborated with Lotus Engineering for the Rhino’s refinement and with MG Rover for its diesel engine. Sonalika also set up a manufacturing line specifically for passenger vehicles, boasting an annual capacity of 24,000 units, and supplied engines to General Motors for the Tavera.
Beyond the Rhino, Sonalika showed its innovative edge with a sedan project, the Sonalika EVO, designed in collaboration with Italian firm Pininfarina. The EVO, resembling the first-gen BMW X6, unfortunately, never reached production.
With the automotive industry seeing a trend in reviving classic models, the reintroduction of the Sonalika Rhino MUV could appeal to a market fond of nostalgic comebacks. Combining its rich legacy with global expertise, Sonalika could establish a robust presence in the burgeoning Indian passenger vehicle sector with a reimagined Rhino.
