On December 12, 2024, the Haitong Taicang Auto Terminal, a collaborative project involving SAIC Motor, Shanghai International Port (Group). (SIPG), and Jiangsu Port Logistics Group, officially began operations. This facility, the largest automobile roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) terminal along the Yangtze River, is poised to play a key role in the global automotive supply chain.
With an annual throughput capacity of 1.3 million vehicles, the terminal enhances global trade logistics and serves as a crucial gateway for Chinese automotive brands expanding internationally. It provides comprehensive ocean logistics services to automakers, including SAIC Motor, facilitating seamless export operations.
SAIC Motor has already established an extensive international footprint, offering products and services in over 100 countries. The company’s MG brand has gained significant recognition in markets such as Europe, the UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico. From January to November 2024, SAIC Motor achieved overseas sales of 937,000 vehicles, with over 220,000 MG vehicles sold in Europe alone despite challenges such as EU anti-subsidy investigations.
A key contributor to this success is SAIC Anji Logistics, a global leader in automotive logistics and a subsidiary of SAIC Motor. The company operates across nearly 600 cities in China and over 100 countries worldwide, boasting an annual transport capacity of 10 million vehicles. It manages an extensive ‘T-shaped’ logistics network along China’s coast and rivers and a ‘fan-shaped’ railway terminal layout, alongside significant RoRo vessel shoreline resources.
The Haitong Terminal, managed by SAIC Anji Logistics, ranks among the world’s largest RoRo terminals, with an estimated throughput of 3.5 million vehicles in 2024. The Taicang facility itself spans 960,000 square meters, featuring a 708-meter shoreline that can accommodate two 70,000-tonne RoRo ships and one 3,000-tonne vessel simultaneously. It provides parking for 32,000 vehicles and operates five service centers for storage, inspection, maintenance, and charging.
This state-of-the-art terminal underscores SAIC Motor’s commitment to strengthening its global supply chain capabilities and solidifying its position as a leader in the international automotive market.
