Renault Group and Geely Auto have unveiled a new joint venture, Horse Powertrain, marking a significant stride towards climate-responsive automotive technology. This partnership focuses on the development of state-of-the-art hybrid and internal combustion engines, setting a benchmark for sustainable mobility initiatives worldwide.
London as a Nexus for Tech
Strategically headquartered in London, Horse Powertrain Limited stands as a beacon of innovation in the automotive sector. The venture is set to design, develop, produce, and distribute an array of sophisticated technologies, including engines, transmissions, hybrid systems, and batteries. Annually, the enterprise will supply roughly five million hybrid and internal combustion powertrains to both parent companies—Renault and Geely—as well as to associated brands like Volvo, Proton, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.
Operational Genesis of Horse Powertrain
Following the Renault Group’s Renaulution strategy, the joint venture was formalized through agreements in July 2023. With approvals from pertinent authorities secured, Horse Powertrain has been launched, amalgamating Renault’s former Horse business and Geely’s Aurobay engine and transmission division into an autonomous entity. This new enterprise commands an impressive infrastructure with 17 global plants, five R&D centers, and about 19,000 employees, targeting an expected annual revenue of approximately €15 billion.
A Vision for Low-Emission Future
Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group, articulated the venture’s mission: “Today marks an important step in meeting the greatest challenges facing the automotive industry: the decarbonisation of road transport.” The company is committed to diversifying powertrain technology to include highly efficient internal combustion engines that utilize alternative fuels—ethanol, methanol, LPG, CNG, and hydrogen—and advanced hybrid models.
Impact and Market Leadership
Eric Li, Chairman of Geely Holding, elaborated on the venture’s global impact: “For the industry to reach net zero emissions in the next decades, global synergies, multiple technologies, and sharing of expertise, are crucial. That is why we are pleased that our partnership with Renault Group is reaching commercial reality today.” Horse Powertrain Limited is poised to influence 80% of the rapidly expanding global market for hybrid and combustion powertrains, providing pivotal low-emission solutions for tomorrow’s automotive industry.
Elevating Sustainable Mobility
This launch coincides with recent announcements from Subaru, Toyota, and Mazda regarding their endeavors to develop new internal combustion engines that complement electrification efforts. Horse Powertrain is at the forefront, driving the industry towards carbon neutrality by integrating innovative and efficient technologies to meet the evolving demands of global sustainability standards. Today’s inauguration not only signifies a new era in mobility but also underscores Renault and Geely’s dedication to fostering an environmentally responsible future.
