Malaysian automaker Proton is steadily moving toward locally assembling its own electric vehicles (EVs), as construction of its new CKD (completely knocked down) EV plant in Tanjung Malim nears completion. Proton has completed 90.4% of the plant’s development in just six months and expects to begin operations as early as September
Located within the advanced Tanjung Malim complex in Perak, the facility has achieved 83.5% progress in equipment installation, with overall progress now at 86.9%. Once fully operational, the plant will manufacture several EV models based on the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform, Proton confirmed in a statement.

Featuring a modular and scalable layout, the new EV plant is built to flexibly accommodate future models and varying production volumes. Initially, it will have a production capacity of 20,000 units per year. With future upgrades, the facility can be expanded to handle up to 45,000 units annually, depending on market demand for Proton’s EVs both in Malaysia and internationally.
Key infrastructure components, including utility systems, material handling routes, and digital traceability solutions such as manufacturing execution systems (MES) and warehouse management systems (WMS), have been established to enable future scaling without the need for major redesigns.

Production will begin with the Proton e.MAS 7, marking the debut of the first electric vehicle from a Malaysian automotive brand. It will be followed by the Proton e.MAS 5, the country’s highly anticipated entry-level EV, which is currently on display across Malaysia as part of a nationwide tour.
Through its collaboration with Geely, Proton has received support in setting up its new EV plant. The Chinese automaker has offered technical expertise on production systems, assisted in selecting suitable equipment, and sent specialists to oversee installation and trial operations. Additionally, Geely has arranged overseas training programs for Proton personnel and ensured the facility meets international standards for EV manufacturing.
