Porsche is expected to add gearshift simulation features to its future electric models, beginning with the 2027 Taycan, which will debut in late 2026 equipped with a ‘virtual transmission.’
The Drive reported that Porsche informed dealer managers about the upcoming update at a November conference in Atlanta. Sales teams are expected to prepare for the release of new electric models with a ‘virtual gearbox’ in the latter half of 2026, with August highlighted as the beginning of order placements.
“Porsche continuously tests and evaluates potential new technologies as part of its research and development process,” a spokesperson told The Drive.

“If and when these technologies may or may not be brought to market is decided based on the insights gained from these exploratory tests. The same applies to consideration of a potential virtual transmission in the future,” he added.
In recent weeks, reports have emerged that the Stuttgart-based automaker is working on the system.
It remains uncertain whether the upcoming Cayenne Electric or Macan Electric will feature a virtual transmission, as neither model currently includes paddle shifters. For the 2027 Taycan, paddle shifters will be added to support the virtual transmission and will be accompanied by a major upgrade to the PCM (Porsche Communication Management) infotainment system.

While the Taycan is not expected to receive the curved touchscreen found in the 2026 Cayenne Electric, the updated PCM will likely incorporate aspects of the new SUV’s interface.
Porsche has already introduced synthetic engine sounds in the electric Cayenne. According to Frank Moser, Head of Series for Porsche’s two‑door models, the system was initially anticipated to debut in the electric 718, but the next Taycan model year will now receive it.
The feature will be offered exclusively on new Taycan models and will not be added to existing vehicles via a software update.
