Polestar has become the first car manufacturer to integrate Google Maps’ new live lane guidance into its vehicles, delivering a more advanced and intuitive AI-powered navigation experience — the first of its kind in any car.
The EV manufacturer is introducing Google Maps’ latest live lane guidance directly onto the Polestar 4’s 10.2-inch driver display, marking its first-ever appearance in any vehicle.
The new live lane guidance system utilizes Google’s advanced AI to interpret lane markings, road signs, and data from the Polestar 4’s forward-facing cameras. It provides a visual representation of all lanes along the route, clearly indicating the vehicle’s current lane and the upcoming turns or exits.
“Polestar 4 will be the first to integrate our groundbreaking live lane guidance, helping people drive with even more confidence and setting a new benchmark for navigation across the auto industry,” Andrew Foster, Director of Product Management for Google Maps, stated.

This advancement supports Polestar’s driver-centric UX strategy, enhancing situational awareness and easing the pressure of sudden lane changes in congested traffic. It delivers real-time visual and audio guidance, helping drivers switch lanes smoothly, safely, and with greater confidence.
Normally, Google Maps uses a top-down GPS view, supported by an internet connection to ensure accurate positioning and real-time traffic updates. The new Live Lane Guidance feature builds on this by incorporating camera data and AI to gently steer drivers back on track if they drift into the incorrect lane.

“Live lane guidance continues the path of Polestar’s driver-centric UX strategy, reducing driver stress and improving safety by making missed exits and last-minute lane changes much less of a worry,” said Sid Odedra, Polestar’s head of UI/UX.
The feature will roll out in the coming months through an over-the-air (OTA) update, first becoming available to Polestar 4 drivers in the U.S. and Sweden, with plans to expand to more regions and road types later on.
