Octopus Energy, Uber, and BYD have launched a partnership to offer the UK’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV) charging bundle for Uber drivers, for promoting the switch to electric vehicles and reducing emissions.
Announced at Uber’s Go Get Zero climate event, the partnership includes Octopus Energy installing up to 1,000 free home chargers for Uber drivers in the UK who purchase any BYD electric vehicle and join the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff.
This tariff allows drivers to charge their EVs for as little as 2p per mile, making it six times cheaper than using a petrol car. Factoring in the free charger and the cheaper charging rate, it becomes 10 times more cost-effective for Uber drivers to charge their vehicles compared to petrol.
Participants also receive an 8% discount on Octopus Electroverse, which provides access to more than 850,000 EV chargers worldwide. BYD, the world’s largest EV maker, offers affordable electric cars to help Uber drivers operate with zero emissions.
Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy, said, “Octopus leads the way on EV charging and it’s exciting to partner with Uber and BYD to bring cheap, convenient, clean transport to thousands of Uber drivers and hundreds of thousands of riders.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi noted, “There are now over 180,000 EVs on Uber and drivers are going electric five times faster than the average motorist, but there’s much more to do. The new features and partnerships being announced today are designed to accelerate electrification and make sustainable choices easier for drivers, consumers, and merchants.”
