Tesla CEO Elon Musk has alleged a potential connection between the explosion of a Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas and a similar attack in New Orleans, citing that both vehicles were rented from the car rental platform Turo.
In a post on X, Musk stated, “Appears likely to be an act of terrorism. Both this Cybertruck and the F-150 suicide bomb in New Orleans were rented from Turo. Perhaps they are linked in some way.”
The Las Vegas explosion, which occurred Wednesday morning, resulted in one fatality and injured seven others, according to CNN. Musk clarified that the explosion was caused by fireworks or a bomb carried in the Cybertruck’s bed, emphasizing that it was unrelated to the vehicle itself.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of Las Vegas reported that emergency responders arrived at the Trump International Hotel shortly after 8:40 a.m. to find the 2024 Cybertruck engulfed in flames. The remains of an unidentified individual were found inside the vehicle. Investigators have determined that the explosives comprised fireworks, gas tanks, and camping fuel, all connected to a detonation system controlled by the driver.
The FBI has joined the investigation, with acting special agent Jeremy Schwartz confirming federal involvement. Authorities are probing potential ties to the New Orleans incident, where a suspect used a rented Ford F-150 Lightning to ram into a crowd during New Year’s celebrations, killing 15 people.
Musk’s allegations have drawn attention to Turo’s rental processes as investigators work to determine whether the two incidents are connected. Both cases remain under active investigation, with law enforcement seeking to understand the motives and links behind the attacks.
