Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has marked a significant milestone in its global expansion strategy by commencing the production of the new Minicab EV, also known as L100 EV in Indonesia, at its PT Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Indonesia (MMKI) facility. This move represents the first instance of local production of this electric commercial vehicle outside Japan, highlighting Mitsubishi Motors’ commitment to supporting the Indonesian automotive industry and the wider ASEAN region’s environmental initiatives.
Takao Kato, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors, highlighted the company’s dedication to the Indonesian auto industry. Since 2017, the production of the Xpander at MMKI has seen success both domestically and internationally, strengthening Indonesia’s position in the automotive sector. The launch of Minicab EV production overseas demonstrates Mitsubishi’s commitment to meeting the rising demand for EVs and contributing to environmental sustainability.
The Minicab EV stands out with its monobox design, incorporating the proven EV system from the i-MiEV, the world’s first mass-produced EV. Its design cleverly positions the drive battery under the floor’s center, optimizing cargo space without sacrificing vehicle performance. The vehicle’s low center of gravity ensures excellent steering stability and a comfortable driving experience, ideal for urban commercial use.
Mitsubishi Motors’ production of the Minicab EV in Indonesia is a strategic move to support sustainable business practices and reduce CO2 emissions in commercial settings, particularly in urban logistics. This effort forms a critical component of Mitsubishi’s commitment to fostering a carbon-neutral society through innovative and eco-friendly solutions.
Additionally, as a part of its strategy in the ASEAN region, Mitsubishi Motors plans to begin exporting the Pajero Sport midsize SUV from Indonesia to Australia in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023. Currently produced in Thailand, this move diversifies Mitsubishi’s vehicle production and distribution strategy within the ASEAN market.
Set for release in Indonesia in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023, the Minicab EV signifies Mitsubishi Motors’ drive to advance EV technology and promote sustainable development. This strategic expansion not only enhances Mitsubishi’s global presence but also underscores Indonesia’s rising importance in the electric vehicle industry.
