Milan’s bold stride into environmental sustainability reaches a new peak with the acquisition of 105 Urbino 18 electric buses from Solaris Bus & Coach. This move firmly plants the city on the map of urban centers revolutionizing transportation with an eco-conscious approach.
Since 2014, Milan has been at the forefront of adopting greener transportation, with public transport operator ATM Milano becoming a prime recipient of Solaris’ zero-emission buses. The partnership has flourished, resulting in nearly 500 vehicles from Solaris enhancing Milan’s transit system, particularly since 2018 when the focus shifted exclusively to zero-emission models.
Javier Iriarte, CEO of Solaris Bus & Coach, shared his insights on this evolving landscape. “Solaris e-buses have become a permanent fixture in the landscape of European towns and cities, pursuing their mission to boost zero-emission mobility. Milan sets an impressive example by heavily investing in sustainable transport. We are very pleased to be a partner in this transition,” he remarked.
The Urbino 18 electric model embodies cutting-edge technology and environmental considerations. These buses come equipped with high-capacity Solaris High Energy batteries, each holding 700 kWh. Milan’s infrastructure adapts seamlessly to these vehicles, offering both pantograph and plug-in charging. Strategic placement of charging stations along routes ensures these buses maintain optimal performance throughout the day.
Solaris’ reach extends beyond Milan, reflecting a growing demand for sustainable transport solutions in Italy. Recent deals include providing 98 Urbino e-buses to Cagliari and 90 hydrogen buses to Venice. A notable achievement awaits as Solaris prepares to deliver 130 hydrogen-powered buses to Bologna, setting a record for Europe’s largest hydrogen bus order.
This trend across Italian cities mirrors a wider European commitment to sustainable urban mobility. Cities like Milan are not just upgrading their public transport systems but are also playing a crucial role in the global fight against climate change. The collaboration between Solaris and Milan exemplifies how the public and private sectors can unite to create a more sustainable, eco-friendly future.
