Automotive technology powerhouses, Marelli and ams OSRAM, have pushed the envelope of automotive lighting with the pioneering h-Digi microLED module. Launched into serial production, this innovative invention signifies a dramatic shift in adaptable, dynamic automotive lighting, expanding its reach to a comprehensive variety of vehicles with its affordability.
Harnessing intelligent multipixel LED technology, the h-Digi microLED module pioneers the new frontier of adaptive front lighting, capable of projecting images while dynamically accommodating various driving scenarios. With an impressive pixel count reaching a colossal 40,000, this technology stands alone, providing high-resolution, flexible light distribution across both low-beam and high-beam settings.
Equipped with remarkable adaptability, the h-Digi microLED system ensures perfect lighting alignment for diverse environments — be it bustling city streets, serene country roads, speedy highways, or unpredictable weather. It also brings forward an innovative system that provides dynamic curve lighting and surgically precise, glare-free high beam zones, minimizing risk for oncoming drivers.
Didier Thalgott, Senior VP at Marelli’s Automotive Lighting & Sensing division, proudly stated, “ams OSRAM and Marelli are cooperating to transform the future of automotive front lighting. The h-Digi microLED platform module, based on the ams OSRAM EVIYOS 2.0, enables us to develop solutions for global carmakers providing more safety and comfort for drivers at night. In addition, thanks to its compactness, improved power consumption and affordable pricing, the system opens doors to applying the technology also in mid-level car segments. With h-Digi microLED, Marelli is driving the next generation of digital vehicle lighting.”
The state-of-the-art system utilizes the EVIYOS 2.0 light source from ams OSRAM. Pairing this with a tailor-made optical lens system and a unique electronic control developed by Marelli’s Automotive Lighting & Sensing division led to an unprecedented leap in automotive lighting — the debut of 40 µm x 40 µm LEDs for vehicle headlamps.
Featuring pixel densities that overshadow conventional LED systems tenfold, the h-Digi microLED brings unparalleled precision to the table. Two micro-LED options, with 25,600 or 19,200 pixels per lamp, provide flexible choices depending on the selected aspect ratio.
Wolfgang Lex, Senior Vice President of Automotive at ams OSRAM, shared, ”High-resolution adaptive forward lighting is set to become the next big differentiator for vehicles from the world’s premium brands. EVIYOS 2.0 is the enabler of the most precisely controllable forward lighting systems and is a major new value creator for the automotive industry. We are excited to be working with Marelli to co-create the future of automotive mobility and enhance driver safety and experience.”
The release of the h-Digi microLED symbolizes Marelli’s ongoing commitment to pioneering high-definition projection systems. An evolution from their h-Digi technology — the first-ever headlamp boasting a high-definition projector — which Marelli introduced in 2018, this latest innovation highlights the company’s dedication to accelerating the digital evolution of vehicle lighting.
