At CES 2024, LG, the Korean electronics powerhouse, revealed an innovative in-cabin display tailored for the burgeoning software-defined vehicle (SDV) sector. This pivotal announcement signals LG’s foray into a new realm of vehicle technology, merging automotive engineering with sophisticated digital interfaces.
LG’s concept transforms vehicles into ‘smartphones-on-wheels,’ led by the rapid ‘screenification’ of onboard user experiences. A spectrum of display screens addresses the individual needs of occupants, enhancing the drive with diverse functionalities. These screens are pivotal for both information and entertainment during transit and provide a comprehensive range of infotainment services when stationary. Designed to integrate with future autonomous driving modes, these interfaces represent a paradigm shift in vehicle interior interactions.
The LG Display showcases a variety of large-sized automotive display solutions, enveloping the entire dashboard area. These technologies include plastic organic light emitting diode (P-OLED), advanced thin organic light-emitting diode (OLED ATO), and low-temperature polycrystalline silicon liquid crystal display (LTPS LCD).
P-OLED, a standout in LG’s technology suite, features ultra-high-resolution on a flexible plastic substrate, merging lightweight design with unmatched flexibility. OLED ATO employs glass substrates, blending the strengths of automotive OLED technology with affordability. LG’s LTPS LCD, a high-performance panel, offers larger, higher-resolution displays compared to traditional LCDs.
Adopting smartphone technologies, these displays incorporate individual privacy modes. This innovative feature auto-adjusts the display’s angle, ensuring the driver’s focus remains squarely on the road, minimizing distractions. For instance, movies or games on the front passenger’s side are hidden from the driver’s view, and available exclusively to the passenger.
LG’s system also includes slidable and foldable OLEDs installed behind seats, offering versatility and user convenience. These screens can be stowed away or extended on demand.
Byeong-koo Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of the Auto Business Group at LG Display, commented on the company’s dedication to this breakthrough. “We will continue to strengthen our global leadership with our latest optimal automotive display solutions for the next generation of mobility,” he stated.
LG’s CES 2024 unveiling is a testament to the company’s commitment to a digitally enhanced automotive future. As vehicles transform into more than just transport means, LG leads the charge toward an interactive, connected, and technologically advanced automotive era.
