Reaffirming its commitment to American utility truck manufacturing, Komatsu has resumed production of the revered HM400-5 articulated haul trucks at its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This marks a triumphant return of truck production to the United States after a hiatus of over a decade when the production was based in the Ibaraki plant in Japan.
Prominent for its 473-HP engine and the capacity to navigate challenging landscapes, the HM400-5 truck serves the construction, quarry, and mining industries effectively. Regardless of operators’ experience, this formidable truck offers excellent performance, consistently delivering productive outcomes.
A celebratory event at the Chattanooga plant recently marked the revitalization of the HM400-5 production line, an occasion graced by local and state officials, including U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann. This event symbolized unequivocal support for the revitalization of local manufacturing.
Komatsu’s decision to renew HM400-5 production exemplifies their unwavering dedication to Chattanooga and Tennessee, fostering local job opportunities and stimulating the regional economy. This action also reinforces confidence in the region’s committed workforce and robust economic infrastructure.
The re-establishment of truck production escalates engagement with local and regional suppliers. Concurrently, it paves the way for regional students to gain invaluable manufacturing experience. With this intent, the Chattanooga plant runs a pre-apprenticeship scheme for high school seniors, enabling them to acquire credits toward full apprenticeship certification at Chattanooga State Community College.
The redirection of HM400-5 truck production to the U.S. originates from escalating demand in North America and Canada. Komatsu North America’s Chairman and CEO, Rod Schrader, emphasized that this move intensifies the company’s devotion to supporting American jobs and manufacturing while substantially contributing to Chattanooga’s economy.
The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) views the return of HM400-5 production to America as a strong indication of the country’s vibrant equipment manufacturing sector. AEM stresses the need for policy support that encourages expansion and innovation in American manufacturing, ensuring job creation and community investment.
Alongside the HM400-5, the Chattanooga facility also fabricates midsize hydraulic excavators and intelligent excavators, as well as specific machines for the forestry sector. The plant employs roughly 525 individuals, with 425 dedicated to manufacturing operations and the remaining assigned to various Komatsu divisions.
