Kia Motors has revealed an innovative camouflage wrap for its inaugural pickup truck, the Kia Tasman, drawing inspiration from Tasmania’s pristine wilderness at Australia’s southern extremity.
Christened after the rugged Tasmanian landscape, this vehicle represents a pivotal foray for Kia into the fiercely competitive C-segment of the pickup truck market.
The camouflage design, a result of a collaboration with celebrated artist Richard Boyd-Dunlop of Australia and New Zealand, is themed ‘The Path Never Taken.’ This motif not only accentuates the Tasman’s adventurous capabilities but also integrates elements from Boyd-Dunlop’s personal experiences and artistic ethos.
“Our Tasman pickup truck embodies Kia’s commitment to design and innovation, as well as its spirit of adventure. Artist Richard Boyd-Dunlop crafted an exclusive camouflage design, with the support of the Kia design team, that depicts a journey and reflects an essence of adventure that is unique to the Tasman,” commented Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design.
Boyd-Dunlop’s creation draws on the raw beauty of Australia’s varied terrains, from coastal expanses to the rugged outback. The wrap’s dynamic patterns blend the arid hues of the desert with the commanding blues of the oceanic expanses, saluting Australia’s significant surf culture and the untouched allure of its landscapes.
“This design resonates as it evokes my own personal experiences travelling across Australia and the encounters that I had,” said Boyd-Dunlop. “These experiences are influential to my work, and the Tasman enabled me to create a continuation of this, depicting the connection, joy, and sheer sense of adventure that is inherent to Australian culture.”
Set for a 2025 debut, the Kia Tasman will initially launch in strategic markets including Korea, Australia, Africa, and the Middle East. The truck’s design ensures versatility, catering to both professional and personal demands, thus accommodating a demanding 24/7 lifestyle that may encompass extreme recreational pursuits.
To commemorate this unveiling, Kia has produced a detailed video exploring the intricate inspirations behind the Tasman’s distinctive camouflage concept, illustrating the genesis of this innovative design.
