The latest Electric Vehicle Outlook 2024 report identifies Kenya as a forefront adopter of electric vehicles (EVs), reflecting a significant global shift toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating urban air pollution for Sustainable Mobility.
This report underscores substantial progress within public transport electrification, with cities like Bogota and Santiago also advancing. Africa’s largest electric bus company, BasiGo, confirms orders for 350 buses, nearly 2% of last year’s global electric bus sales outside China. Plans are underway to increase this fleet with 1,000 additional electric buses in Kenya and 200 in Rwanda.
The Kenyan government has integrated EV adoption into its environmental strategy, aiming to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 32% by 2030 according to its updated Nationally Determined Contribution. With the transport sector accounting for 12% of the nation’s emissions, this focus is pivotal.
Despite funding challenges that have delayed Nairobi’s Bus Rapid Transit system, the government’s commitment to electric buses remains unshaken.
The Global EV Outlook, supported by the Electric Vehicles Initiative, analyzes trends in electric mobility with a view until 2035. This analysis includes vehicle deployment, charging infrastructure, battery demand, and investment trends, assessing the impact of broader EV adoption on electricity use, oil consumption, and emission reductions.
The market dynamics section of the report reveals a 25% increase in electric car sales in the first quarter of this year compared to last. Projections suggest electric cars may comprise up to 45% of all car sales in China, 25% in Europe, and over 11% in the United States by year’s end.
The competitive landscape among manufacturers, declining battery costs, and ongoing policy support are catalyzing this growth. Global electric car sales are anticipated to reach about 17 million this year, securing over a fifth of the total market share.
These trends indicate a transformative reshaping of the global auto industry over the coming decade, positioning electric vehicles at the heart of efforts to diminish fossil fuel dependence and mitigate environmental impacts. With Kenya at the helm in emerging markets, the shift toward electric mobility seems both inevitable and essential for sustainable urban development.
