Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced the recall of nearly 6,400 of its I-PACE electric vehicles in the United States over concerns of potential fire risks. The recall was issued following the company’s concerns that the high-voltage electric vehicle battery in these vehicles might overheat.
JLR, a subsidiary of India’s Tata Motors, confirmed on Wednesday that the recall aims to update the battery energy control module software and replace battery modules as needed in specific model year vehicles ranging from 2019 to 2024.
The automaker acknowledged that its engineering team has not conclusively identified the battery pack assembly as defective or as a direct cause of reported thermal overload conditions. However, they have decided to initiate the recall out of an abundance of caution.
According to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company has received information about eight vehicle fires in the US. Still, there have been no recorded accidents or injuries linked to these incidents.
In other news, JLR, which launched its electric I-PACE model in 2018, recently disclosed plans for further investment in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The company said last month that it plans to invest 15 billion pounds ($18.5 billion) in electric vehicles over the next five years. Moreover, on Wednesday, JLR promised to introduce a new electric Jaguar model by 2025.
