India’s Highly reputed automotive powerhouse, Mahindra, is gearing up to redefine the global electric vehicle (EV) landscape with its innovative BE.05 SUV. Initially unveiled at the Mahindra EV Fashion Festival in Hyderabad, India, on February 10, 2023, this sleek five-seater compact SUV-coupe is slated for its grand launch in the first quarter of 2025.
The BE.05 is a pivotal facet of Mahindra’s audacious Born Electric (BE) series, featuring alongside models like the BE.07 and BE.09. With a tentative launch window of June 2026, this model could be priced between INR 16 lakh ($19,500) to 20 lakh ($24,500), ex-showroom, based on the chosen variant.
Exhibiting a seamless automatic transmission, the BE.05 boasts an astonishing 500km range complemented by swift charging capacities. The vehicle comes fitted with a robust battery pack, providing an impressive 290hp for rear-wheel drive and a whopping 390hp for the all-wheel-drive version. This EV promises to mitigate range anxiety with its 80% charging in just 30 minutes, courtesy of a 175 kWh DC fast charger.
The BE.05 combines agility with efficiency, racing from 0-100 kmph in a mere 6 seconds. Constructed on Mahindra’s pioneering INGLO (Indian Global) platform, renowned for its modular design and high adaptability with RWD and AWD electric drivetrains, this model exhibits the brand’s technical finesse.
In a landmark decision, Mahindra will incorporate Volkswagen’s MEB platform components, including battery packs and motors, into its EVs. This strategic alliance underscores Mahindra’s unwavering commitment to developing superior and sustainable mobility technologies.
In terms of design, the BE.05 masterfully strikes a balance between functionality and style. Its exterior features a streamlined silhouette enhanced by an Aero Bridge on the bonnet and dual air curtains on the bumper, optimising efficiency. Accents like a sunroof and rectangular LED daytime running lamps lend a dash of elegance while improving visibility. Unique twin spoiler patterns flow from the roof to the rear, boosting aerodynamics and injecting a distinct design element.
The BE.05’s interior is a blend of comfort and cutting-edge technology. Twin 12.3-inch displays form the heart of its infotainment system, with ADAS systems expected on the steering wheel, augmented by three supplementary widescreens to display vital driving information. With voice command functionality and a conveniently placed gear system, the BE.05 offers a streamlined user experience.
Mahindra’s commitment to delivering a perfect fusion of futuristic design and practicality is evident in the test version of the BE.05, sighted near Chennai, which closely mirrors the original concept, barring minor modifications such as traditional wing mirrors and subdued wheel arches.
With its anticipated range of 435km to 450km under the WLTP cycle, and loaded with state-of-the-art features such as 5G network compatibility, Over-the-air (OTA) updates, and expansive screens, the BE.05 is well poised to be a formidable competitor in the global EV market, sitting above the XUV400 EV in the Mahindra portfolio.
