Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) today disclosed that the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 will be the premier model rolling out from its new production facility in Georgia. This new move underscores Hyundai’s ambitious drive to capture a larger share of the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) market.
Set to start production by the end of the year, the Georgia Metaplant will focus on assembling the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5, with plans to produce all trim lines except the IONIQ 5 N. This facility will become the primary production site for the IONIQ 5 in the U.S.
Oscar Kwon, President and CEO of HMGMA, shared his optimism about the developments. “We are in the final phase of construction and are getting ready for the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 to roll off the line. It’s the ideal vehicle for us to start production with,” he said, emphasizing the model’s critical role in the company’s future.
Already, the IONIQ 5 dominates the EV sector with numerous awards, including Best Electric SUV and Best EV for the Money from U.S. News & World Report, along with Cars .com’s Best Electric Vehicle title for the second consecutive year. Its safety and engineering excellence have earned it the 2022 World Car of the Year and 2023 MotorTrend SUV of the Year, among other distinctions.
The vehicle’s popularity is evident in its sales trajectory, with a 43% increase in 2024 and a notable 82% jump in May. Hyundai enhances this momentum with a June offer which includes a $7,500 cash rebate for 2024 IONIQ 5 purchasers, with lessees also eligible for a federal tax credit of the same amount.
The $7.59 billion investment in the Metaplant is planning to create 8,500 jobs directly. This is part of Hyundai’s larger investment strategy, which includes a $5 billion partnership with SK On to build an EV battery cell plant in Bartow County, expected to employ 3,500 individuals. Collectively, these initiatives should generate approximately 40,000 jobs and $4.6 billion in annual earnings, per a Center for Automotive Research study.
Additional vehicle models slated for production at the Metaplant will be announced subsequently. The facility will also manufacture vehicles for Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia, reinforcing Hyundai’s dedication to technological innovation and market expansion in the U.S.
