Hyundai Mobis has joined forces with domestic chipmakers and research institutions to establish South Korea’s first private-sector-led automotive semiconductor value chain, the auto parts maker announced on Monday.
The initiative was unveiled at the inaugural Auto Semicon Korea event in Seoul, where 23 companies and research organizations gathered to explore opportunities in the fast-growing market for vehicle chips. Industry leaders, including Samsung Electronics and SK keyfoundry, aligned on the need to localize chip development for automobiles, a sector long dominated by suppliers in North America and Europe.

Participants pledged to create a self-sustaining value chain and new business models aimed at strengthening Korea’s competitiveness in the global market. Hyundai Mobis, a global Tier 1 automotive supplier, will play a central role by bridging technology providers and automakers.
“We are securing independent semiconductor design capabilities, while pursuing joint development with fabless firms and design houses, and even expanding cooperation with major foundries,” Hyundai Mobis CEO Lee Gyu-suk said at the event. “Hyundai Mobis actively encourages companies with expertise in home appliance and mobile sectors to enter the mobility area, so we can take the lead in building the domestic ecosystem.”

The move reflects the rising strategic importance of in-vehicle chips, driven by advancements in electric vehicles (EVs), connectivity, and autonomous driving technologies. Data from Boston Consulting Group projects the global automotive semiconductor market to grow more than 9% annually through 2030, fueled by electric mobility and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Hyundai Mobis has already developed 16 semiconductor types in-house and is mass-producing them through external foundries. The company expects to gradually expand sales of chips used in infotainment, connectivity, ADAS, and electrification as the industry shifts toward smarter and more autonomous vehicles.
