Hyundai Motor and Kia received top marks in critical safety tests on their EVs. The latest evaluations, announced on Sunday, reinforce the brands’ commitment to safety and innovation in the electric vehicle sector.
Five models from these South Korean automakers, built on Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), have secured the highest five-star rating from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP). The Genesis GV60, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, and Kia’s EV6 and EV9 have all emerged as leading contenders in the safety arena, according to Yonhap.
Recognition doesn’t stop at Europe’s borders. In the United States, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the GV60, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and EV6 the Top Safety Pick (TSP) Plus rating. The EV9 earned the Top Safety Pick distinction, underscoring Hyundai and Kia’s global standing in automotive safety.
Hyundai Motor Group has a history of excellence in safety standards. Last year, the group saw 20 vehicles earn TSP or higher ratings from the IIHS—the highest tally among global automotive manufacturers. The newly launched Kia EV3, also developed on the E-GMP platform, is expected to perform similarly in upcoming evaluations. However, it has yet to be tested in Europe and the U.S.
A Hyundai Motor Group representative stated that the company remains deeply committed to advancing passenger safety through continuous research and development.
Despite recent public concerns following a fire involving a Mercedes-Benz EV in Incheon, Hyundai and Kia have assured consumers of the reliability of their EV batteries. Their advanced internal management systems are designed to maintain safety, even under maximum charge conditions.
