Honda is expanding its ‘Safety for Everyone’ initiative to include efforts beyond advanced safety technologies, focusing on driver awareness, behavior, and improving the traffic safety ecosystem. The company aims to eliminate traffic collision fatalities involving its vehicles, including older models, by 2050.
As a leader in crash prevention, Honda recognizes that technology alone cannot prevent all fatalities, especially in older vehicles without the latest safety features. It stresses the need for collaboration to enhance driver skills and improve traffic systems.
“Honda is committed to safety in all of its forms, to rapidly advance technology, education, advocacy and collaboration with like-minded people and organizations. In short, our path forward is Safety for Everyone, with everyone.” said Brian Bautsch, director of North American safety strategy at American Honda Motor.
Safety Education for Young Drivers
Honda has launched Honda Safety Driven, a multi-year initiative with Discovery Education, to address traffic fatalities among drivers under 25. The program, started in October 2023, offers safety education to students through virtual field trips to Honda’s safety facilities. Over 250,000 students have participated, and the program continues in school curriculums.
This week, Honda introduced two new educational tools. The first, Crash Course, is an interactive video game teaching students about car crash physics and reducing road risks. The second, a Pedestrian Safety lesson bundle, educates students on road safety with interactive content and family action plans. Esports team Team Liquid also contributed to a video featuring Honda’s Motocompacto e-scooter.
Pioneering Rider and Driver Education
Honda, an early leader in motorcycle rider education, operates three U.S. training centers, training over 11,000 riders annually. In 2022, Honda introduced the Safety Training Awareness & Responsibility for Teens (START) program at its Indiana plant, with plans to expand to more locations.
Supporting Traffic Safety Initiatives
Honda and the Honda USA Foundation have provided over $6 million to nonprofit safety programs since 2021. Applications for new funding programs are open until October 31, 2024.
Driver Coaching App for New Drivers
In June 2023, Honda launched the Honda Driver Coaching app, providing real-time driving analysis to help new drivers improve their skills. The app, compatible with many Honda and Acura models with Apple CarPlay, offers feedback on steering, braking, and acceleration, aiming to promote safer driving habits.
