In a move to embrace innovative vehicle designs, India has amended its motor vehicle regulations to create a new classification called ‘L2–5’. This category accommodates vehicles that blur the lines between traditional classifications, such as the ‘Surge S32’ by Hero MotoCorp.
This unique electric hybrid seamlessly transforms from an auto-rickshaw to a scooter, offering versatile transportation solutions. The ‘Surge S32’ has garnered international acclaim, receiving the prestigious ‘Platinum A Design’ award for its exceptional design and functionality. With the ability to charge the auto-rickshaw component while using the scooter mode, this vehicle represents a new era in sustainable and adaptable urban mobility.
The scooter runs on its own battery pack, allowing for easy switching between modes. The transformation process takes just three minutes, and four models are available, including passenger and pickup versions. Both the scooter and the auto-rickshaw share the same registration number.
The scooter has a top speed of 60 km/h, while the auto-rickshaw mode reaches up to 45 km/h. Initially introduced as Hero Quark 1 in 2020, the vehicle is now ready for the market. The price is yet to be announced.
