General Motors plans to introduce a range of advanced technologies in its vehicles by 2028, featuring eyes-off driving assistance, in-car artificial intelligence, and more. During the GM Forward event in New York on Wednesday, CEO Mary Barra and other executives unveiled the initiatives, emphasizing their vision to turn the car from just a means of transportation to a smart and interactive assistant.
GM plans to launch the Level 3 hands-free, eyes-off highway driving feature in the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028. The automaker first led the way in hands-free driving with its Level 2 Super Cruise introduced in 2017, and now it’s poised to elevate its technology to a new tier.
GM states that the new Level 3 system will be functional on all U.S. highways, covering a range comparable to the 750,000 miles supported by Super Cruise, and will be backed by advanced perception and decision-making technologies. This hands-free, eyes-off driver assistance system will rely on lidar, radar, and cameras for environmental awareness.

Beginning next year, GM also intends to integrate Google’s Gemini AI into its vehicles, offering a more conversational voice assistant that enables drivers to interact naturally, effectively turning them into an intelligent assistant. In the long term, the company plans to launch its own proprietary AI platform.
On the software front, GM says it expects to launch a new centralized computing platform in 2028. The company describes it as a complete reimagining of vehicle design, updates, and long-term improvements. According to GM, the system will offer ten times more over-the-air update capacity, a thousand times greater bandwidth, and up to 35 times more AI performance to support autonomous and advanced features. The automaker added that the platform will be implemented across both its electric and internal combustion engine vehicles.
