Ford Trucks has formed a strategic alliance with Argus Cyber Security, an eminent authority in automotive cyber defenses, to conduct pivotal vehicle-level penetration testing on its newly unveiled heavy-duty truck, the Ford Trucks F-MAX. This collaboration aims to align with rigorous UNR 155 cyber security regulations, securing the necessary type approval certification vital for the truck’s commercial launch.
The UNR 155 regulation mandates a robust cyber security framework for vehicle manufacturers. This standard necessitates thorough penetration tests to affirm the security of the vehicle’s electronic and software architectures against diverse potential threats, essential for obtaining type approval for new vehicles across various categories, including cars, trucks, and buses.
Emrah Duman, leader at Ford Trucks, underscored the rationale behind selecting Argus, stating, “We chose Argus to conduct the vehicle-level pentest based on its proven experience, knowledge, methodology and expertise. Argus’s ability to complete the testing and submit the required documentation to the auditors in an extremely short time frame with top quality results was critical for enabling us to meet our business goals.”
Executed by the Argus Consulting Services team, the testing regimen was exhaustive, encompassing all facets of UNR 155. It included in-vehicle testing of components such as Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and network interfaces, along with bidirectional communications with backend servers. Argus’ innovative approach facilitated the simultaneous execution of multiple testing activities, significantly streamlining the process.
Subsequent to the testing, Argus produced a comprehensive report and a mitigation strategy that Ford Trucks presented to the auditors for the type approval procedure.
Yehuda Kaufman, VP of Consulting and Research at Argus, articulated the company’s dedication to elevating vehicle security and facilitating OEMs’ navigation through regulatory challenges efficiently. “Argus is committed to working with world-leading vehicle brands to raise the level of cyber security and to streamline their regulatory compliance efforts.”
“Our cyber security consultants bring a deep understanding of the compliance needs of OEMs, together with well-defined pentesting processes that have been acknowledged by multiple auditors. These capabilities provide OEMs with the peace of mind they need to achieve type approval certification quickly and meet their production timeline goals,” he added.
This partnership represents a critical advancement for Ford Trucks in fortifying cyber security measures and expediting the market introduction of the new F-MAX truck, conforming to international regulatory standards and safeguarding vehicular integrity against cyber threats.
