Global Auto Holdings Limited (GAHL) has appointed Alex Smith, former Managing Director of Volkswagen Group UK, as Chair of Lookers. The move comes as GAHL continues to enhance its leadership structure following its acquisition of Lookers in 2023.
Smith brings extensive industry experience, having served six years as MD of Volkswagen Group UK, where he oversaw the sale of more than one in every five new cars and light commercial vehicles nationwide. His career also includes roles as Vice President of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and MD of Nissan Motor Great Britain.
Commenting on his new role, Smith expressed enthusiasm about joining GAHL during a pivotal period for the automotive industry. “In an industry experiencing profound change and simultaneous opportunity, I’m absolutely delighted to join Global Auto Holdings to work with dedicated and experienced leadership teams with demonstrable track records in retail, automotive, and financial services to drive the Group’s growth ambitions in the UK and Europe,” he said. Smith praised the talent within GAHL and its strong brand portfolio, emphasizing his commitment to supporting OEM partners and customers through this transformative phase.
Smith will work closely with Lookers MD James Brearley and the newly appointed executive team to further the company’s transformation. Both Smith and Brearley have also joined GAHL’s Global Executive Committee, aligning leadership across the group’s European operations.
A GAHL spokesperson highlighted Smith’s appointment as a critical milestone in Lookers’ ongoing transformation. “The Lookers team, led by James Brearley, has made significant progress in transforming the business into a customer-centric, high-performing auto retailer. We are extremely pleased to add someone of Alex’s caliber to the Lookers leadership team. His deep automotive expertise, track record of industry-leading results, and strategic capabilities will greatly benefit both Lookers and GAHL’s European operations.”
The spokesperson noted that Smith’s appointment marks the completion of the first phase of Lookers’ transformation, initiated after GAHL’s acquisition. The restructured leadership team is expected to prioritize customer relationships, strengthen OEM partnerships, and drive sustainable growth across the business.
