The European Union is set to initiate a Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the European Automotive Industry in January to address challenges facing the region’s carmakers. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the move on Thursday, emphasising the need to support the struggling sector, which she described as a source of European pride.
The dialogue will involve key stakeholders, including automotive companies, trade unions, and business associations, to design measures aimed at bolstering the industry’s global competitiveness. The initiative comes at a critical time, as automakers like Volkswagen reassess strategies amid stiff competition from Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers.
Key topics to be addressed include support for decarbonisation efforts, navigating stricter EU vehicle carbon dioxide emission regulations taking effect next year, and tackling employment challenges linked to industry transformations. Industry representatives have raised concerns about meeting new emissions standards, citing weak demand for EVs as a significant hurdle.
The dialogue will also explore strategies to advance technological innovation in EVs and autonomous driving, which are increasingly defining the sector’s future.
Von der Leyen stressed the importance of ensuring the automotive industry’s continued success, highlighting its vital role in Europe’s economy and identity.
