Daimler Truck AG, along with its Japanese subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso Bus and Truck Corporation, has commenced the handover of its pioneering next-generation Fuso eCanter to Yamato Transport Co., marking the beginning of the delivery of approximately 900 eCanters ordered by the company. This development represents the largest individual order for Fuso’s electric light-duty truck.
Yamato Transport is undertaking this initiative as part of its commitment to significantly decrease its environmental impact by aiming for a 48% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, relative to 2020 levels, and striving for virtually no greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company will utilize the Fuso Green Lease, a specialized leasing offering from Daimler Truck Financial Services Asia, created exclusively for the new eCanter. This includes vehicle maintenance services and unique warranties.
The eCanter, initially introduced by Fuso in 2017, was a trailblazer as Japan’s first mass-produced electric, locally CO2-emission-free, light-duty truck. It contributes to a more comfortable and focused driving experience by minimizing noise and vibration levels. Over the past half-decade, numerous global businesses have adopted the Fuso eCanter and provided valuable feedback based on usage experience.
Utilizing this feedback, Fuso developed the next-generation eCanter. This led Yamato Transport, an early adopter of the eCanter that had previously integrated 25 units of the first-generation eCanter in 2017, to decide to incorporate approximately 900 units of the next-generation eCanter into its fleet for home delivery and various other logistics services throughout Japan.
Karl Deppen, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation, emphasized the advantages of the eCanter, noting, “Fuso’s eCanter reduces the burden on drivers by offering them safe, low-vibration driving without emissions. This was highly evaluated by Yamato Transport, who previously introduced 25 of the first-generation eCanter back in 2017.”
Earlier this year, the next-generation eCanter was introduced in several European markets, Japan, and several overseas markets. Last month marked the debut of the eCanter in Indonesia and Chile.
Production of the next-gen eCanter commenced in Europe on May 22, 2023, at the Mitsubishi Fuso Europe plant in Tramagal, Portugal. Production had already started in the first quarter at the sister plant in Kawasaki, Japan, which distributes the new eCanter to Japan and all other non-European markets globally. Initially, sales in Europe will begin in 17 markets, including France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Greece, and Poland.
This significant collaboration between Daimler Truck AG, Mitsubishi Fuso Bus and Truck Corporation, and Yamato Transport Co. represents a substantial stride towards a more sustainable future in the worldwide transportation industry.
