Materials manufacturer Covestro has joined forces with GOVY Technology, a subsidiary of Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), to advance material solutions for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This collaboration aims to accelerate the development of efficient and sustainable urban air mobility solutions.
As one of eight companies partnering with GOVY, Covestro signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support the development of eVTOL technology. GOVY, established by GAC, is dedicated to creating next-generation flying cars. Covestro’s role in the project leverages its expertise in high-performance materials and sustainable innovations.
“Our partnership with GAC marks a pivotal moment in urban air mobility,” said Lily Wang, President of the Engineering Plastics Business Entity at Covestro. “Through our sustainable materials and GAC’s visionary approach, we are transforming the future of urban transport.”
Su Qingpeng, General Manager of GOVY, added, “This collaboration with Covestro and other industry leaders accelerates the development of safe, sustainable, and groundbreaking urban transportation solutions.”
China’s rapid advancements in battery technology and urban transportation systems are positioning eVTOL vehicles as a solution to urban congestion, pollution reduction, and enhanced connectivity. Designed for short-distance travel, current eVTOL models offer inter-city commuting capabilities, aligning with consumer needs and government goals for sustainable urban development.
The partnership will focus on several critical areas, including:
- Polycarbonate Glazing Solutions: Lightweight materials to enhance performance and safety.
- Smart Lighting Systems: Tailored to the unique needs of eVTOL aircraft.
- High-Performance Components: Materials that integrate smart systems seamlessly.
- Low-Carbon Materials: Incorporating bio-circular and recycled feedstocks to minimise emissions throughout the vehicle lifecycle.
At the signing ceremony, a prototype flying car was unveiled, showcasing a hybrid design that combines fixed-wing efficiency with rotary-wing versatility. The vehicle boasts an impressive range of 200 kilometers in just 40 minutes. Pre-orders for these innovative models are set to begin in 2025, signaling a new era in urban transportation.
This partnership underscores Covestro and GAC’s shared vision for sustainable, innovative mobility solutions, bringing the future of urban transportation closer to reality.
