Beijing: China’s automobile industry marked a significant milestone in April as vehicle exports surged by 34 percent year-on-year, totaling 504,000 units, according to the latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
The bulk of these exports were passenger cars, which saw an impressive year-on-year increase of 35.9 percent, reaching 429,000 units shipped internationally. This growth highlights China’s strengthening position in the global auto market, particularly in the passenger vehicle sector.
While passenger cars dominated the export figures, commercial vehicles also showed robust performance despite a slight month-on-month decline of 4.2 percent. Year-on-year, commercial vehicle exports grew by 24 percent, with 74,000 units exported in April alone.
The first four months of the year have also been fruitful for China’s auto industry, with cumulative exports reaching 1.827 million units, up 33.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Of these, passenger cars comprised the majority, with exports amounting to 1.539 million units, a 34.8 percent increase from the previous year. Commercial vehicles also saw a substantial rise, with 288,000 units exported, marking a 26.5 percent increase year-on-year.
China’s total vehicle exports reached 4.91 million in 2023, positioning the country on track to become the world’s largest auto exporter. Notably, the export of new energy vehicles has been a significant growth driver, surging 77.6 percent to 1.2 million units last year, underscoring China’s pivotal role in the expanding global market for environmentally friendly vehicles.
This performance is a clear indicator of China’s ascending trajectory in the global automotive sector, reinforcing its status as a dominant player in international vehicle exports.
