BYD Australia has confirmed it will launch the all-electric Atto 1 city hatchback next month, promising it will become the country’s new cheapest all-electric model.
Also known as the Dolphin Surf, Dolphin Mini, and Seagull, the Atto 1 will arrive in Australian showrooms this November alongside the previously confirmed Atto 2.
Priced below the $29,990 (before on-road costs) Atto 1 will become BYD’s most affordable model. Although BYD Australia hasn’t disclosed the exact price yet, Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins has indicated that it will be priced competitively, matching petrol-powered rivals such as the Mazda 2 (starting at $28,190), Suzuki Swift (from $24,490), and Toyota Yaris (from $28,990).
While Australian specifications are yet to be confirmed, the UK version of the Dolphin Surf comes with a choice of either a 30kWh or 43.2kWh battery, offering WLTP-rated driving ranges of 220km and 322km. The single-motor setup delivers either 65kW or 115kW, depending on the variant.

In terms of dimensions, the Atto 1 measures 3990mm in length, 1715mm in width, and 1590mm in height, with a 2500mm wheelbase, making it comparable in size to the Toyota Yaris.
In addition to the Atto 1, BYD has confirmed that the Sealion 5 will arrive in Australian showrooms in early 2026, launching alongside the Sealion 8. Based on the Song Pro sold internationally, the Sealion 5 will join the Sealion 6 as another plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV. These additions follow the earlier confirmation of the Atto 2 small electric SUV and the Sealion 8, a three-row plug-in hybrid large SUV.
Later this year, BYD Australia will also introduce its premium Denza sub-brand, starting with the launch of the B5 and B8 plug-in hybrid 4WD SUVs as the first models in the new luxury lineup.
