BYD has unveiled its Atto 2 electric SUV at Brussels Motor Show. This midsize EV, designed to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly vehicles, is set to hit the European market next month. Positioned as a smaller sibling to the Atto 3, the Atto 2 could potentially make its way to India, targeting competitors such as the Maruti e Vitara and Hyundai Creta Electric.
Compact Yet Distinctive Design
The BYD Atto 2 measures 4,310mm in length, slightly shorter than the Atto 3’s 4,455mm. It maintains a width of 1,830mm and a height of 1,675mm. The SUV’s design draws inspiration from its larger counterpart, featuring sleek LED headlights, black cladding with silver accents, and pull-type door handles. At the rear, it boasts connected LED tail lamps, a raised-end spoiler reminiscent of the MG Hector, and a faux diffuser with silver detailing.
Modern Interior with Advanced Features
Inside, the Atto 2 accommodates five passengers with a blend of modernity and functionality. A standout feature is its rotatable 15.6-inch touchscreen, shared with the BYD Seal sedan. The cabin is adorned with all-black upholstery, ambient lighting, and convenient Type C charging ports. While an ADAS suite could be included to compete in its segment, BYD has yet to confirm its availability. The vehicle offers a practical boot capacity of 400 liters.
Performance and Range
The Atto 2 is powered by a front-wheel-drive electric motor delivering 176hp, paired with BYD’s proprietary 45.1kWh Blade Cell battery pack. This configuration offers an impressive range of up to 312 kilometers on a single charge. A long-range variant, expected to achieve 402 kilometers, is slated for future release.
Global and Indian Prospects
The Atto 2 has earned a 5-star rating from the Green NCAP for its energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact, further solidifying its appeal. This rating evaluates sustainability parameters and is distinct from crash safety assessments conducted by organizations like GNCAP and BNCAP.
In India, where BYD’s lineup includes the Atto 3, Seal, and eMAX 7, the Atto 2 could play a significant role in the growing EV market. Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicle Business at BYD, has hinted at the possibility of introducing a new SUV priced around ₹20 lakh, with the Atto 2 being a strong contender to rival the Vitara and Creta Electric.
