The HiPhi brand, a Chinese automaker specializing in futuristic, high-dollar electric vehicles (EVs), has made waves in the industry under the leadership of a British executive, Mark Stanton. Formerly an engineer at Jaguar Land Rover and Ford, Stanton joined the start-up Human Horizons as their CTO four years ago, when he was on the cusp of retirement.
Two HiPhi models are already on sale in China, while a third debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show. The brand’s vehicles, designed for wealthy young buyers, boast innovative features such as video projection through headlights and adjustable robot arms in the cabin. HiPhi has already sold 10,000 cars in China, with the X model outselling competitors like the Porsche Taycan, Mercedes EQC, Tesla Model S, and Tesla Model X, making it the best-selling premium EV in the country.
Stanton’s engineering expertise ensures that the brand’s models are built on a shared architecture, capable of supporting single- or dual-motor options, and providing a higher level of driving precision. Human Horizons has now grown to over 5,000 employees, with 2,400 engineers, although the company still lacks its own production plant under China’s strict licensing requirements.
With plans to expand into Europe through Germany and Norway, HiPhi aims to make an impact in markets with similar regulations as China. Stanton acknowledges that U.S. sales are less likely due to political issues and different type approval requirements, but remains focused on expansion in other parts of the world. Despite the challenges of COVID-19 and long-lasting travel restrictions, Stanton reflects on his time with HiPhi as a fantastic experience and a brilliant way to end his career.
