BorgWarner has announced its acquisition of two critical high-voltage hairpin (HVH) eMotor contracts with XPeng, a prominent Chinese Smart EV manufacturer. These agreements entail the integration of BorgWarner’s advanced 800V oil-cooled eMotor systems into two forthcoming XPeng SUV models, with production commencing in 2025.
This latest venture underscores BorgWarner’s commitment to pioneering eMotor technology and strengthening its alliance with XPeng, which has flourished over recent years. “We are thrilled to expand our eMotor business with XPeng and build upon our years-long partnership with them,” expressed Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems. “As we continuously evolve our HVH technology, we are dedicated to delivering maximum efficiency for our customer’s two future SUV models.”
Central to this collaboration is the HVH220 eMotor, showcasing BorgWarner’s patented high-voltage hairpin winding technology, designed for an 800V propulsion system. This motor solution, with a stator outer diameter of 220 mm, integrates a permanent magnet rotor along with proprietary stator insulation enhancements, ensuring unparalleled durability and reliability. Capable of producing up to 300kW of power and achieving speeds up to 18,000 rpm, the HVH220 reaches peak efficiencies exceeding 97%.
BorgWarner’s innovative approach also includes the use of oil-cooled solutions. This method employs gearbox oil to cool the motor, thereby optimizing heat transfer and enhancing thermal management efficiency. Direct rotor oil cooling plays an essential role by effectively extracting heat from the electric motor core, allowing for elevated torque and power density, thereby significantly enhancing motor performance.
These advancements signal a significant progression in the automotive industry’s shift towards electrification. Companies like BorgWarner and XPeng lead the charge in developing high-performance, sustainable solutions that are reshaping the global automotive landscape. As these technologies evolve and proliferate, the future of electric vehicles grows increasingly bright, driven by strategic partnerships that catalyze innovation and efficiency.
