A milestone move towards cleaner public transportation has been marked by TPER, Bologna’s municipal public transport operator, with the acquisition of a record 130 hydrogen buses from e-mobility leader Solaris. This order, unprecedented in its scale in Europe, comprises 127 units of the 12-metre Urbino 12 hydrogen buses designated for TPER Bologna and an additional three units for TPER Ferrara. Additionally, the deal provides the carrier with the option to increase the order by up to 140 vehicles.
This monumental project positions Bologna and Ferrara as pioneers in the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell buses in Europe. By incorporating 130 hydrogen-powered vehicles into their public transportation fleet, both cities are actively progressing towards their objective of completely transitioning to zero-emission urban public transport by 2030. Opting for the widely recognized Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses is a strategic move towards achieving this target.
Cutting-Edge Hydrogen System
Each Urbino 12 hydrogen bus is equipped with a state-of-the-art hydrogen system that complies with the most stringent safety standards. A 70 kW fuel cell extracts hydrogen from five composite tanks situated on the roof of the bus. With a full capacity of 37.5 kg of hydrogen, the buses can cover an impressive distance of approximately 350 km, positioning them as a practical and environmentally friendly alternative for urban travel.
Phased Delivery
The benefits of the Urbino 12 hydrogen buses will be realized by the residents of Bologna and Ferrara starting in 2024 when the initial batch of 37 hydrogen units is slated for delivery. The subsequent vehicles are scheduled to arrive between 2025 and 2026.
E-Mobility Leadership
Solaris has carved a niche for itself as a trailblazer in the European e-mobility landscape, particularly in the production of hydrogen buses. The company has successfully delivered over 120 hydrogen-powered units to various clients in eight countries. In 2022, Solaris broadened its hydrogen portfolio by unveiling the articulated Urbino 18 hydrogen bus.
This historic order underscores the dedication of Bologna and Ferrara to sustainable urban transportation and cements Solaris’ position as a leading producer of hydrogen-powered vehicles in Europe. The integration of hydrogen buses is a pivotal step towards realizing a zero-emission future and enhancing the urban living experience.
