BMW recalls Mini Cooper SE electric models worldwide due to potential battery overheating issues. Over 140,000 vehicles could be affected, with safety inspections urged.
German automotive giant BMW has issued a global recall of its electric Mini Cooper SE models to address potential battery safety concerns. The recall, which may impact over 140,000 vehicles worldwide, stems from the risk of battery overheating, which could potentially lead to fires, even when the vehicles are not in use.
In Germany, around 39,000 Mini Cooper SE vehicles are believed to be affected. Despite the recall, BMW has confirmed that no accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the battery issue.
BMW’s official statement highlighted that the problem arises from issues within the battery system that could cause overheating, thereby increasing the risk of a fire. To combat this, the Mini Cooper SE’s software includes a diagnostic function designed to detect any battery malfunctions and alert the driver.
BMW has advised customers who receive an alert message to promptly visit an authorised Mini dealership for a vehicle inspection. Necessary repairs or software updates will be carried out to ensure the safety of the vehicles. The company is committed to resolving the issue swiftly to maintain the trust and safety of its customers.
The Mini Cooper SE, a well-regarded electric vehicle, is equipped with a 32.6 kWh battery pack offering a WLTP-claimed range of 270 kilometres. Its electric motor provides 184 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque. Charging options include a 50 kW fast charger, capable of recharging the battery from 0-80% in approximately 36 minutes.
Beyond its electric powertrain, the Mini Cooper SE is loaded with features such as a 5.5-inch digital driver’s display, an 8.8-inch infotainment system, Apple CarPlay compatibility, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, and a twin sunroof.
Safety remains a top priority for BMW. The Mini Cooper SE is equipped with dual front airbags, brake assist, driver assistance systems, dynamic stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system, a crash sensor, cornering brake control, and a rearview camera as standard features.
