BMW is the world’s first carmaker to secure approval for Level 2 and Level 3 autonomous driving technologies. This approach is showcased in the new BMW 7 Series, which features the BMW Highway Assistant and the BMW Personal Pilot L3.
Advanced Comfort with Level 2 Automation
The BMW Highway Assistant, an advanced Level 2 system boosts comfort on extensive road journeys by allowing the vehicle to operate autonomously at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph) on designated motorways. This system permits drivers to relax their grip on the steering wheel for prolonged periods under safe conditions. Complementing this, the Active Lane Change Assistant facilitates seamless lane transitions without driver intervention, dynamically adjusting speed and steering according to traffic conditions.
Sophisticated Level 3 Autonomy for Complex Traffic
The BMW Personal Pilot L3, representing sophisticated Level 3 autonomy, transforms user interaction with vehicular control by permitting drivers to divert their focus from driving under certain conditions, such as traffic jams, at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph). This enables occupants to engage in alternative activities, including communication, entertainment, and work. The system demands driver readiness to reassume control promptly under complex road scenarios, including roadworks.
Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President of Driving Experience at BMW Group, articulates the significance of this technological integration: “We are setting new standards in the automotive industry by combining both technologies in the new BMW 7 Series. In the process, we are underlining our commitment to offering our customers a safe, comfortable, and innovative driving experience.”
This dual-capability framework is not merely a testament to BMW’s pioneering role in automotive technology but also signals a paradigm shift towards more adaptive, intelligent vehicles. The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are components of the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 package, priced additionally in Germany. Existing vehicle owners with the BMW Personal Pilot L3 can anticipate a complimentary upgrade, adding the BMW Highway Assistant starting August 2024.
