An updated BMW M5 boasting the Neue Klasse Design has been spotted in its winter testing phase, ahead of its anticipated debut in late 2027 in the U.S.
The BMW M5 has been observed, showcasing redesigned headlights and taillights, as well as a revised grille that echoes the Neue Klasse series ushering a new dedicated EV platform along with advanced cabin technologies. This update is in line with BMW’s plan to refresh the 5-Series lineup for the 2028 model year, ensuring the lineup remains a strong contender against its latest rivals.

The front fascia presents a stark contrast to the recently launched prototype. The headlights and kidney grille, influenced by the Vision Neue Klasse sedan, incorporate multiple LED elements to create BMW’s iconic front-end. The lower portion showcases a bold bumper with sizable air intakes and air curtains, embodying classic M design characteristics.
The latest M5 combines a potent plug-in hybrid powertrain, featuring a 4.4-liter V-8 with twin turbos working alongside an electric motor embedded in the 8-speed automatic gearbox. This system generates an impressive 717 horsepower, with the 14.8-kwh usable battery capacity enabling about 25 miles of electric-only driving.
The upcoming refreshed model might see a power boost, complemented by a more advanced and lighter battery pack likely incorporating innovations from BMW’s Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform. This potential weight reduction will highly improve the M5’s performance, considering its substantial 5,390-pound curb weight.

The M5’s interior is poised for a revolutionary overhaul with the advent of BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system, initially unveiled at CES 2025. The next-generation iDrive system, running on Operating System X, is anchored by a commanding 17.9-inch central display that serves as the primary control interface. This screen manages Panoramic Vision’s various widgets and navigation functions.
The conventional instrument cluster will be replaced by a cutting-edge head-up display spanning the entire windshield. The interface comprises minimal physical control buttons and sophisticated voice, gesture control integration. This system will debut in the Neue Klasse EV lineup before being incorporated into models like the M5 and 5-Series facelift.
Slimmer taillights with multiple LED elements is potentially linked by a light strip spanning the trunk. BMW has also refined the bumper design, removing the unusual central notch from the current model and opting for a cleaner, more streamlined appearance that slightly reduces the aggressive look.
The iconic quad exhaust tips are still present, indicating the immense power under the hood. The BMW M5 facelift is set to launch in late 2027, ensuring the M5 remains competitive amidst increasing rivals and BMW’s push towards electrification.
