The foremost authority in automotive safety solutions Autolive, has unveiled a groundbreaking development in sustainable manufacturing including, airbag cushions crafted entirely from recycled polyester. This new innovation underscores the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and aligning with global sustainability goals.
Through strategic collaborations with major suppliers, Autoliv has engineered yarns, fabrics, and cushions from 100% recycled materials, specifically designed for airbag production. Extensive testing confirms these new airbag cushions uphold the safety standards of traditional polyester airbags while slashing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 50% at the polymer production level.
Jordi Lombarte, Chief Technology Officer at Autoliv, highlighted the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. “We are walking the talk on our climate ambitions at Autoliv, by bringing the first technology to create airbags using 100% recycled polyester fabric. We have successfully proven the technology and are ready to offer it to our customers worldwide,” stated Lombarte.
This venture is integral to Autoliv’s strategy to achieve net-zero GHG emissions throughout its supply chain by 2040. The adoption of these eco-friendly practices into their product development optimizes resource efficiency and minimizes the ecological impacts of their manufacturing processes.
The eco-innovative airbag cushion is now a component of Autoliv’s global product portfolio, accessible to customers worldwide. This progress attests to Autoliv’s leadership in fostering environmental sustainability and circularity within the automotive sector.
Lombarte further noted, “We are leading the way in developing airbags made from recycled polyester on current airbags. This milestone reflects our commitment to climate action and circularity, and our journey toward a more sustainable future.”
