ATC Drivetrain, a Detroit-based remanufacturer of automotive drivetrain technology, announces a $7.9 million investment for a new electric vehicle facility in Holland, Michigan. With headquarters in Farmington Hills and a presence across the US, Europe, and China, this expansion signifies a strategic consolidation into a state-of-the-art Holland EV Center of Excellence.
The Michigan Strategic Fund board recently approved a $2 million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant for the company’s expansion. This grant will aid the 170,000-square-foot expansion at 1285 Waverly Road. Sean Kammer, MEDC business development project manager, highlighted this project as a significant contribution to Michigan’s emerging position in the EV industry.
The expansion is expected to create up to 163 jobs over five years, encompassing various engineering and technician roles. These positions will offer an average wage of $26.60 per hour, supplemented by benefits. Amanda Murray, vice president of business solutions at Lakeshore Advantage Corp., emphasized the significance of this project in cementing West Michigan’s role in the future of automotive electrification.
ATC Drivetrain’s commitment to automotive electrification is evident in its focus on remanufacturing EV components, batteries, transmissions, and engines. They initially considered consolidating their operations in Holland or relocating their entire Michigan EV operations to Knoxville, Tennessee. The incentives offered by Michigan were pivotal in their decision to remain and expand in West Michigan.
The company’s history in automotive remanufacturing dates back to 1938 in Oklahoma, evolving significantly over the decades. Recently, ATC Drivetrain has expanded its capabilities to support the automotive industry’s transition to electrification. This includes engaging in three of the four stages of a battery’s life cycle: remanufacturing, reuse, and recycling.
In 2022, ATC Drivetrain acquired Holland-based Global Battery Solutions and U.K.-based vehicle manufacturing company Treharne, enhancing its capabilities in EV systems and life cycle battery management. This expansion in Holland is not just a triumph for the local area but a significant step forward for Michigan, showcasing a local company’s growth and contribution to the EV sector.
