AkzoNobel’s Resicoat brand has launched a pioneering powder coatings technology, significantly advancing the electrical protection of EV battery systems. This innovative development addresses the increasing demand for coatings with higher dielectric strength, enhancing battery safety and efficiency.
Achieving the required film thickness now takes just one spray, a substantial improvement over traditional multi-spray processes. This breakthrough not only ensures safety but also optimizes efficiency and productivity within the EV industry.
“We’ve developed innovative technology which addresses a clear need within the industry and helps to improve safety,” says Jeff Jirak, Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business. “It’s an important breakthrough which means customers no longer have to spray twice or more to achieve the right thickness for providing high dielectric strength.”
Available in China, the new technology suits various battery system components, including cooling plates, side plates, and battery enclosures. The ability to form a consistent film with a single application accelerates production, reduces man-hours, and improves asset utilization, which is crucial for the fast-evolving EV market.
“Thanks to decades of knowledge and non-stop innovation, we understand how exceptional powder coatings, combined with the right application technique, can provide consistent electrical insulation throughout the life of key battery system components,” Jirak continues. “It’s further proof of our commitment to supporting our customers through partnerships and product development to create, fuel, and protect the innovations of the future.”
Beyond enhancing safety, AkzoNobel’s one-spray technology offers resistance to thermal shock, water immersion, and chemicals, ensuring the durability and reliability of EV battery systems. The company’s extensive global presence guarantees consistent product quality and service worldwide.
“Working with customers throughout the value chain has put us in a unique position to understand the needs of the market. Our strong global footprint means they can benefit from our ability to deliver consistency in product and service worldwide,” Jirak adds.
