Volkswagen’s unveiling of a unique convertible variant of the Virtus at its Sao Bernardo do Campo facility, São Paulo, Brazil, marks a notable event in the automotive world. Launched in 2022, the Virtus, developed on the MQB A0 IN platform in India, represents Volkswagen’s strategic push into international markets, with Brazil now hosting this distinctive prototype.
Known as Virtus Cabrio, this singular open-top version of the mid-size sedan was revealed to coincide with the visit of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, adding ceremonial significance to its introduction.
Engineering Mastery and Bespoke Features
The Virtus Cabrio amalgamates elements from the model’s Highline and Exclusive trims, yielding a vehicle that is visually arresting and technologically sophisticated. The removal of the roof necessitated comprehensive structural enhancements and adjustments, including door realignment and the adoption of a pillarless design for a more streamlined appearance.
Adjustments extended to the vehicle’s interior, with the floor lengthened to increase space and alter the fuel tank’s positioning and size. The rear seating received a unique redesign to fit this special edition’s layout. Significant modifications were made to external components and electronic vehicle management systems, ensuring uncompromised performance and safety.
Dressed in Biscay Blue with 18-inch alloy wheels featuring a darkened finish, the Virtus Cabrio’s external charm is undeniable. Its interior boasts a sophisticated all-black theme, accentuating the vehicle’s luxurious exterior. A dedicated team of 30 professionals crafted this bespoke prototype within six weeks, demonstrating Volkswagen’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and craftsmanship.
Performance Specifications
Propelling the Virtus Cabrio is a 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, a unique combination for this prototype diverging from the configurations offered in the India-spec Virtus.
A Tradition of Unique Convertibles
Volkswagen’s history of crafting one-off convertible prototypes dates back to 1959, with unique versions of models like the Beetle, Polo Sedan, and Fox. The Virtus Cabrio joins this prestigious collection in the VW Garage, alongside other special, sports, and prototype vehicles from Volkswagen, though it will not enter the market.
This event underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to innovation and engineering excellence, highlighting the global appeal of its models designed for versatility and adaptability across markets. The Virtus Cabrio stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and functionality, while paying tribute to its rich history of convertible models.
