A groundbreaking partnership has emerged between UL Solutions and Hyundai Mobis North America Electrified Powertrain LLC, a subsidiary of the global auto parts leader Hyundai Mobis. This collaboration solidified through a memorandum of understanding (MOU), targets the enhancement of electric vehicle (EV) battery safety and performance.

At the core of this partnership is a comprehensive evaluation of EV battery performance, focusing on aspects such as reliability, efficiency, and safety, and ensuring compliance with rigorous regulatory standards. The primary venue for this vital work is the UL Solutions North America Advanced Battery Laboratory, a sophisticated facility set to open in mid-2024 in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Hyundai Mobis North America Electrified Powertrain’s role extends beyond collaboration; the company plans active involvement in standard development working groups with UL Solutions. These groups aim to refine industry norms concerning EV safety and performance.
Milan Dotlich, the vice president and general manager of the Energy and Industrial Automation group at UL Solutions, stressed the necessity of safety and performance to match the rapid advancements in lithium-ion battery technology. He praised Hyundai Mobis North America Electrified Powertrain for valuing UL Solutions’ expertise in enhancing the performance and safety of EV batteries. Dotlich pointed out that this collaboration is crucial for building confidence among consumers and stakeholders in the production, use, and transport of EVs worldwide.
Sungkuk Park, president of Hyundai Mobis North America Electrified Powertrain, expressed eagerness about the partnership with UL Solutions. Park highlighted the significance of disseminating their findings to the wider EV battery industry, aiding the progress in safety and performance. Hyundai Mobis, with its extensive global presence, including EV production bases in nine locations and plans for six new sites in South Korea, North America, and Indonesia, solidifies its commitment to electrification through this MOU with UL Solutions.
