Celebrating its 30th year, the Charlotte Auto Show recently wrapped up a four-day extravaganza at the Charlotte Convention Center. This event, a magnet for car enthusiasts, displayed a wide array of vehicles from 29 brands, featuring SUVs, trucks, and luxury sports cars. The showstopper was the Toyota Corolla, priced at $21,000, declared by Toyota Product Specialist Quaid McIver as ‘the world’s most popular car.’
The exhibition, with nearly 200 vehicles, catered to diverse tastes and needs. Jenn Jackson, the Charlotte Auto Show’s executive director, expressed joy over the public’s response to the myriad of vehicles presented. This year, electric vehicles (EVs) took center stage, signaling a shift in consumer interest. Automakers responded with a variety of EV options, more than in previous years.
Laurie Reed, attending for the first time, shared her enthusiasm for the shift to EVs, pointing out the environmental and economic advantages. A new feature this year was Duke Energy’s EV Test Track, allowing visitors to test drive EVs. Jackson observed the growing interest in EVs among those usually driving internal combustion engines.
The timing of the auto show was crucial, coinciding with significant developments in the automotive industry. After extensive labor negotiations, the United Auto Workers union secured new contracts with major automakers like Ford and Stellantis. These agreements, following weeks of strikes, promise higher wages and compel automakers to bear increased costs. This aligns with the industry’s transition from gasoline-fueled vehicles, evident in the show’s emphasis on EVs.
Jackson recognized the challenges posed by the industry’s transformation but also noted the foresight shown by manufacturers and dealers in adapting to these changes. The Charlotte Auto Show, thus, was not just a celebration of its 30-year history but also a glimpse into the future of motoring, marking a crucial moment in the automotive industry’s shift towards more sustainable and innovative transportation.
